The best jeans in the entire world are made an hour from our house
The other day we made a trip to our favorite designers of denim anywhere, Raleigh Denim, a business started by some of our friends, Victor and Sarah. Their jeans, which are sold in stores like Barneys in New York, are just incredibly well made, and made in small batches, starting from raw denim, in their shop in downtown Raleigh.
The jeans are a joy to try on, because they fit so well and are beautiful, and you know they will last forever. We went to get new jeans for tour, since we are about to tour for at least a year and a half, and we want a quality sheath for bodies, to protect us on our adventures. We may have gotten a little carried away, because we each left the shop with three new pairs, in a variety of delicious colors.
Victor and Sarah started their denim company out of their tiny apartment a few years back. It was actually the same apartment, with huge oaks in the backyard, that Phil and I (this is Beth writing) lived in from 2004 to 2006, with a break in there to live in the swamps of South Carolina and write our first album. It had holes in the wall, and was home to a real hoarder before us, but its humble environs nourished and inspired them as well as it did us, apparently.
They now have 26 employees, a huge beautiful warehouse space, and now have a storefront shop, called the Curatory, which also carries other well-made clothing and accessories, crafted by other artisans like themselves. It’s exciting to visit: there are ten or twelve people sewing away on vintage machines, and the walls and work tables are piled high with jeans in every state of completion. It kind of feels like what a small jeans factory would have been like in the 1940s.
Pictured above are: one of the pairs of jeans I got, Phil getting fitted for jeans, and Victor hemming our jeans for us. You’ll be able to see these denim fruits we gathered if you come to one of our shows. At any given time on stage, at least three out of five of us will be wearing some, I’m willing to bet.
The remaining jeans will not be backstage, so don’t try to go back there and steal them.
