At the end of a long tour this past summer, we (Beth and Phil) spent a long weekend up in Northern Minnesota, on a lake where Phil spent many summers, growing up, filming a video for our song, Northern Lights. This lake is also where Phil and Beth each saw the Aurora Borealis for the first time.
We worked with filmmaker Matt Amato, who had already made music videos we admired, for our friend Justin, from Bon Iver, and for the Dodos and Beach House, among many others. We took Matt around with us to different places on and around the beautiful lake, and he filmed us and also all the gorgeous life that grows and lives up there. It was very calm and relaxing, and we ended up doing things like watching a heron hunt for minnows and crawfish for 45 silent minutes from the boat.
We shot the video in a century-old one-room schoolhouse, in a cabin, and on the lake. You can view the video now on the Pitchfork website, following the link below. There is a little button on the bottom right of the video that you can click to see it in full screen.
